The Association for Corporate Growth/Virginia Commonwealth University 5th Annual Business Plan Competition

From Professor Matthew Rutherford:

The Association for Corporate Growth/Virginia Commonwealth University 5th Annual Business Plan Competition was held on April 27th, 2011.

The competition is the culmination (capstone) of the undergraduate concentration in entrepreneurship.  In their final class (spring semester) the seniors prepare (separately or in groups) a business plan for a concept that they would like to implement.  The ideas are actually pitched and decided upon in the previous (fall) semester.  At the end of the spring semester, they present their plans to judges (mostly comprised of Association for Corporate Growth members).  The judges' scores comprise 40% of the students' final grade.  The top 5 plans move on to a second round, which is held at Hirschler Fleischer Law Firm.  The winner and runner-up of this round receive a cash prize ($1,500 for winner and $500 for the runner up).

This year Thrive (Jason Bonasera, Rachell Krumm, and Josh Grohler) was the winner, with More Than Cheer (Brittany Rose, Brent Dodd, Alec Rountree, and Ibrahim Al-Jassim) coming in second place.  Thrive is a fitness company that will produce and market a watch that monitors and manages an individual's workout.  More Than Cheer is a recreational sports company that teaches spirit sports (cheerleading and dance) to young people.
